Quick answers on the small stuff. Bigger topics, like prices, permits, repairs and neighbor questions, have their own guides.
How deep should fence posts go?
Deeper than the frost. The working figure for Massachusetts is roughly four feet. A post that stops short of that gets pushed around each winter, and the fence above it tilts.
Which is better for posts: concrete, gravel or foam?
- Concrete: the usual choice at corners, at gates and under tall solid fences that take wind.
- Gravel: lets water drain away, which helps line posts in soggy ground.
- Foam: quick to set, but less proven where a post carries a gate or a 6-foot panel.
How long do I wait before staining new wood?
Wait for the lumber to dry out. Treated wood is delivered damp, and drying can run from a few weeks to a couple of months depending on the weather. Try the drop test. Flick some water onto a picket. Beads on the surface mean it is too soon. Water that sinks in means you can stain.
What is the price to stain or seal a fence?
The price follows the square footage and how much cleaning or prep the boards need first. Have it quoted as its own item so you can compare it with doing the job yourself.
Are deck screws fine for loose pickets?
They are, provided they carry an exterior coating or are stainless steel. Ordinary steel rusts quickly and leaves marks. On cedar, go with stainless, because other metals react with the wood and leave dark streaks.
Can a vinyl fence be painted once it fades?
Yes, using paint formulated for vinyl. Two cautions. Painted vinyl has to be repainted from time to time. Dark shades soak up heat and may distort the panels. Try a thorough wash first, as that alone restores a lot of the color.
I need a wide gate for an RV or trailer and the posts are weak. Brace them or start over?
Start over at the opening. Wide double gates put a heavy sideways load on their posts, far more than a line post is sized for. Plan on new, larger gate posts in deep concrete footings, and expect the panel on each side to be rebuilt to tie in.
Will a fence change my property taxes?
Ask your local assessor, who makes that decision. Next to the value of the house, a fence is a minor item.
